Although foundational aspects of what would become known as Tai Chi existed beforehand,1 Tai Chi Ch'uan (also written taijiquan) developed as a unique close combat system, depending on the source (excluding myth) somewhere between the late 1700s and late 1800s. However, today most of the knowledge of the close combat use of the art is lost.
Our most important mission at chiarts.com is to research and preserve this lost knowlege. In this, the first in our "Tai Chi Lost Secrets" video series, illustrates hidden principles. Focus is placed on self defense application of the first three moves of the Yang style: Commencement, Ward off Left, and Grasp Sparrow's Tail. Video lesson includes introduction to "Spiral Theory" body mechanics which explains why many essential movements of the style move only clockwise and to the right.
